چکیده
This paper presents a comprehensive survey of existing techniques for interconnect optimizationduring the VLSI physical design process, with emphasis on recent studies on interconnect design and optimization for high-performance VLSI circuit design under the deep submicron fabrication technologies. First, we present a number of interconnect delay models and driver/gate delay models of various degrees of accuracy and efficiency which are most useful to guide the circuit design and interconnect optimization process. Then, we classify the existing work on optimization of VLSI interconnect into the following three categories and discuss the results in each category in detail: (i) topology optimization for high-performance interconnects, including the algorithms for total wirelength minimization, critical pathlength minimization, and delay minimization; (ii) device and interconnect sizing, including techniques for efficient driver, gate, and transistor sizing, optimal wiresizing, and simultaneous topology construction, buffer insertion, buffer and wire sizing; (iii) high-performance clock routing, including abstract clock net topology generation and embedding, planar clock routing, buffer and wire sizing for clock nets, non-tree clock routing, and clock schedule optimization. For each method, we discuss its effectiveness, its advantages and limitations, as well as its computational efficiency. We group the related techniques according to either their optimization techniques or optimization objectives so that the reader can easily compare the quality and efficiency of different solutions.

متن کاملAn Optimization Algorithm Based on Grid-graphs for Minimizing Interconnect Delay in Vlsi Layout Design
In this paper, we describe a routing optimization algorithm based on grid-graphs for application in a deep-submicron VLSI layout design. The proposed algorithm, named S-RABILA (for Simultaneous Routing and Buffer Insertion with Look-Ahead), constructs a maze routing path, simultaneously with buffer insertion and wire sizing, taking into account wire and buffer obstacles, such that the interconn...
متن کاملComprehensive Evaluation of Crosstalk and Delay Profiles in VLSI Interconnect Structures with Partially Coupled Lines
In this paper, we present a methodology to explore and evaluate the crosstalk noise and the profile of its variations, and the delay of interconnects through investigation of two groups of interconnect structures in nano scale VLSI circuits. The interconnect structures in the first group are considered to be partially coupled identical lines. In this case, by choosing proper values for differen...
متن کاملThree-Dimensional Interconnect Modeling for Nano-Scale VLSI Technologies
Designing high performance very large scale integration (VLSI) circuits has become more challenging than ever due to deep sub-micron effects and accelerating time-to-market cycles. With the increasing interconnect delay dominance and strong coupling effects, a small change in the design can cause new timing violations and result in design iterations. At the same time, the industry trend of inte...
متن کاملWire Sizing and Spacing for Lithographic Printability Optimization
As the VLSI feature size has already decreased below lithographic wavelength, the printability problem due to strong diffraction effects poses a serious threat to the progress of VLSI technology. A circuit layout with poor printability implies that it is difficult to make the printed features on wafers follow designed shapes without distortions. The development of Resolution Enhancement Techniq...
